Mt. Bridges, Port Dover take Silver Stick

Wellesley’s hockey arenas were hopping last weekend, as 26 teams competed for two divisional titles in regional Silver Stick tournament  action.

While Twin Centre players had home-ice advantage, neither the Bantam AE nor Midget AE Stars found their way into the medal round. Following four days of competition – split between the St. Clements and Wellesley Village arenas – Mount Brydges downed Wallaceburg with a 4-3 overtime finish to take the Bantam gold. Port Dover earned the Midget championship with a 3-2 win over South Huron.

“It was fantastic. I really enjoyed it,” offered Frank Nelson, chair of the tournament committee. “Obviously  the semis and finals was great hockey – you can tell by the resulting scores.

“There were no major injuries of any kind. …And we got lots of compliments.” Based on program sales, Nelson figures the tournament attracted about 750 adult spectators, as well as several children and the teams themselves.

The Midget AE Stars started the tournament by tying Paris 4-4. They followed that up with a 4-2 loss to Stirling, but took the next two games; 4-2 over Plattsville and 2-1 over Petrolia.

Facing Petrolia again in the semifinal round, the Twin Centre squad found themselves on the losing side of a 3-2 finale, eliminating them from competition. With a 1-1-1 record, the Bantam AE Stars failed to make it to the semifinal round. They posted a 2-2 tie with Listowel, a 4-3 loss to South Huron and a 2-1 win over Lambeth.

Regional tournament winners will face off against one another later this season, during International Silver Stick competitions, similar to the one Wellesley will host in January. Teams from one- and twoclass centres – larger than Twin Centre – will gather to determine who sits in the top Midget AE spot for the season. Several American and Canadian teams have already confirmed their attendance.
